Most eyeglass prescriptions are written in the same format we use on our webpage:

OD is an abbreviation for oculus dexter; OS is an abbreviation for oculus sinister. These are Latin terms meaning right eye and left eye, respectively.

SPH (Sphere) is the measure of lens power, in diopters, needed to correct nearsightedness (negative sphere) or farsightedness (positive sphere). A Plano sphere power means 0.00 (zero) diopters.

CYL (Cylinder) is the amount of power to correct astigmatism. Cylinder power always follows the sphere power in a prescription, and can be positive, negative, or zero. If there are zeros or no numbers in this column you do not have astigmatism.

ADD is the added magnifying power for the reading portion of the prescription. It is always positive, and is sometimes written on your prescription without a plus (+) sign. Unless otherwise specified, both eyes can be assumed to have the same ADD power.

A vision prescription defines the properties of the corrective lenses you need to see clearly. You will need to bring your Provider a copy of a current prescription if you wish to order prescription lenses:

• If you do not have a written prescription, but would like to purchase corrective lenses, you may click the “Continue Without Prescription” button to proceed.

Remember, your Provider will need a copy of your prescription before making your lenses.
